Knowing Our Place

What separates us from every other creature is not intelligence, or tools, or language. It is this: we know our Creator.

We reached the top of the food chain and did not stop there. We kept looking up. From the beginning, we understood that we were made, and that the One who made us stands above us. Biology never satisfied that longing, and no other creature has ever felt it.

"Also, he has put eternity into man's heart." (Ecclesiastes 3:11, ESV)

Biology explains what we are made of, and explains it well. But asked what we are, it hands back a sophisticated animal, and the answer comes up short. Not because the biology is wrong. Because it stops one question early. Nothing in survival or reproduction explains why a creature at the top would keep looking up.

"For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse." (Romans 1:20, ESV)

Notice what Paul does not say. He does not say the knowledge is missing. He says it is suppressed, held down. And you can only hold down what is already there.

Nobody argues against unicorns. Nobody writes books to refute the tooth fairy. But God provokes real effort from the very people who say the question is settled. That effort is the tell. Something that is nothing to a man does not cost him that much.

Remove the longing and it does not disappear. It moves. Refuse the Creator and we will worship the creation, or the nation, or ourselves. The seat above us is never empty. It only changes occupants, and the occupants get worse.

An apex predator rules because it knows its place, what is above it and what is below. Lose that and it can no longer tell a threat from a friend. Our dominion was never ours by strength. It was given, and a gift implies a Giver. We hold it as stewards, not owners. Deny Him and the dominion does not grow. It is forfeit.

The first lie ever told to us was exactly this:

"You will be like God, knowing good and evil." (Genesis 3:5, ESV)

The creature reaching to be the Creator. Every generation repeats it in its own accent. It is the one claim we cannot make without destroying ourselves, because the moment we put ourselves in that seat, we lose sight of what is actually above us.

Ultimate morality must come from an ultimate being. Only the One who made us can say what we are for. This is why those who deny the Lawgiver still reach for the law. They want the fruit and have cut the root. It hangs on a generation or two out of habit, and then it does not.

So the difference was never the size of the brain.

"Man in his pomp yet without understanding is like the beasts that perish." (Psalm 49:20, ESV)

Take away the knowledge of our Creator and nothing is liberated. We are demoted to the only creature on earth that does not know what it is.

And no one climbs down from that seat on his own. Knowing the argument has never once changed a heart. What is needed is not better information but a new heart, and only the One who made the first can make the second.

"And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you." (Ezekiel 36:26, ESV)

That is His work alone, given freely in Christ to those He calls.

Know who is above you. Everything else follows from that.
